Important information about reverse mortgages.
A reverse mortgage is a loan. When the loan ends, some or all of the equity in your home will go to repay it, and you or your heirs may need to sell the home or use other assets to repay the loan with interest. The lender may charge an origination fee, mortgage insurance premiums, closing costs and servicing fees, and add them to the loan balance. Interest is charged on the balance, so the balance grows over time. You keep title to your home until you sell or transfer it, and you must pay property taxes, insurance and maintenance. If you do not, the loan may become due immediately, and your home could face a tax lien or foreclosure. Interest on a reverse mortgage is not deductible until you repay all or part of the loan.
